Bastions of light spot the darkened plains
Figures rushing to and fro upon electric trains
Living ordinary lives without worry or care
While things lurking in shadow plot to catch them unaware
Who knows what fate awaits them beyond the light?
Who knows what creatures hunt them in the night?
I know, for I am master of all dark things
I am the last in a line of forgotten kings
I am lord over those who hide in shadowy places
Those who strike fear in hearts, put terror on faces
We are not evil, and never have been
But, we are forbidden to walk the world of men
Forbidden the light that gives all things life
Doomed to an existence of struggle and strife
Some call us monsters and others ghouls
And we call you all a bunch of pitiful fools
Yes we are different, of that we are proud
Our sigil is a reaper, and our banner a shroud
We adapted to life when you forced us to hide
You only saw the outer shell not what is inside
We are as human as you, no matter our shape
But we're smothered by legends which cling like a cape
Monsters you have made us, so monsters we shall be
Becoming what you fear most but almost never see
All we ever wanted from you was to be accepted
Instead, because of our differences, we were rejected
In the beginning, we actually felt ashamed
And believed in the crimes for which we were blamed
Now, we wage a patient war to last a thousand years
Waiting in the darkness and preying on your fears
And a millenium from now, when all of you are dead
Rest assured that true blame will rest upon my head

Dark, sad, though true. How many are overlooked because of the differences in their appearance? An accounting of a crime unacknowledged, but a crime none the less. Well done BW
